Hydroxyzine Hcl

Syrup

This syrup contains Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride, a first-generation antihistamine with anxiolytic and sedative properties. It works by blocking H1 histamine receptors and suppressing activity in certain areas of the central nervous system, thereby reducing allergic symptoms and inducing a calming effect.

Mechanism

Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride

Blocks H1 receptors and exerts central sedative effects by suppressing subcortical CNS activity.

Pharmacokinetics

  • Absorption: Rapid after oral intake, peak plasma levels in ~2 hours.
  • Metabolism: Extensively metabolized in the liver; major active metabolite is cetirizine.
  • Distribution: Large volume of distribution (~16 L/kg), crosses blood–brain barrier → CNS effects.
  • Elimination: Mainly via urine as metabolites.
  • Half-life: ~20 hours in adults, shorter in children (~7 h), longer in elderly (~29 h).
